Clockodile Book Review

Telling the time can be a tricky concept for children so we were pleased to receive, ‘What’s the time, Clockodile?’ by Jonathan Litton and Illustrated by Fhiona Galloway (Little Tiger Press: My Little World series).   At the cost of £8.99 (RRP May 2015), this story aimed at three to five year olds, is a wonderful way to introduce younger children to reading analogue and digital clocks. My daughter immediately spotted the crocodile and when I told her the title of the book, she giggled and repeated it several times.  We both loved the play on words, especially as we often say to each other, “See you later, Alligator,” “In a while, Crocodile!”

My daughter enjoyed sharing the book with me as it described different activities that were familiar as part of her everyday life.  Each page explained how to read the time on the analogue clock.  The time was drawn on the left of the double page and my daughter turned the hands on the analogue clock on the right, which made a clicking noise as she did this.  She was very excited when she successfully copied the drawn time to the moveable timepiece.  After this part, she enjoyed when I put on my best robot voice to say the digital time, as the Robbie Robot character shows this at the bottom of the double pages.  H decided that the swimming page was her favourite as it reminded her of the fun we had swimming on her recent holiday.

We liked that the clock hands were easy enough for my three year old to move on her own.  We also liked the illustrations and the crocodile as well as the robot characters that help along the way.  We like that it explains whole hours, half hours, quarter past and quarter to as well as some five minute intervals.  I think this is a great introduction to telling the time in a fun way.  My daughter was very taken with this book, which means that we now read it most nights.  She still giggles at the Clockodile name!
