We were recently given a coat and some walking shoes from Millets to enable us to take part in the #MilletsDogs campaign. We have been thinking about our dog walking essentials.
Walks in the Countryside
Floppy really enjoys her walks down the fields in the countryside. We have always had to walk her in the quiet fields as she gets too excited when we walk her in town. She pulls on the lead a lot in town and has been known to pull me to the ground before.
All she wants is a bit of fuss when she sees other people walking by or to play if she sees a child. This is not practical at all so the fields have been the best place to walk her for many years now.
Having the right clothing for countryside walks is essential, as well as having the right lead. A warm, waterproof coat and some sturdy walking shoes are a must for regular long walks.
A New Lead to help with Calmer Walks
Recently, we bought her a special lead, recommended by the vet, to help to stop her pulling. Over the past few months, I have been practicing walking with her on this new lead, in our home as well as around the garden. Step by step, I’ve worked with her to get her to stay by my side when she is on the lead. If she pulls on this new lead, she moves in a more of a circle, instead of pulling me over. Practicing away from my children has also helped.
Dog Walking Essentials for Autumn and Winter with Millets #MilletsDogs
As the cooler months are upon us now, receiving the Millets Peter Storm Women’s View 3 in 1 Jacket and Brasher Country Roamer Walking Shoes were very welcome additions to my winter wear. The coat has two layers, including the waterproof purple outer coat and the white/creamy fleece inner. The fleece can be easily removed so that the coat or fleece can be worn on their own for the warmer months.
I really like that this Peter Storm Women’s View 3 in 1 Jacket has several pockets, which are very useful for taking gloves and of course, dog poop bags. The inside pocket or the outer pocket is very useful for keeping my mobile phone dry too.
The Brasher Country Roamer Walking Shoes were very warm and had a good amount of padding, which meant that they were very comfortable. I do a lot of walking to and from school, as well as for our long walks with Floppy. It is often difficult to find a comfortable pair of shoes with a deep tread.
My usual shoes don’t tend to last for too long as the soles often wear down very quickly. It can be difficult in icy weather as very little tread on my usual shoes tends to mean that I slide about a bit when walking.
The tread on these shoes from Millets were very impressive. Having this deeper tread should mean that these shoes last much longer than my usual shoes. Wintery paths should be much easier to navigate this year.
Inspired to Walk the Dog
Receiving these items from Millets made me feel more motivated to attempt to take Floppy for a walk on the paths around our home. I chose a quiet area, away from lots of traffic and decided to walk alone with her.
I am pleased to say that she handled it brilliantly! Floppy stayed by my side for the whole walk and only once pulled on the lead when she saw someone walking towards us on the path. She responded to my commands well and stopped pulling when I told her to, “Wait,” until the man had passed by.
Floppy and I are looking forward to many more walks in our local area in the future. We will continue to walk down the fields too though.
